Struma Ovarii

A rare teratoid tumor of the ovary composed almost entirely of thyroid tissue, with large follicles containing abundant colloid. Occasionally there are symptoms of hyperthyroidism. 5-10% of struma ovarii become malignant, the only absolute criterion for which is the presence of metastasis. 06/01/2014 - "Four malignant struma ovarii, 1 patient underwent fertility-sparing staging surgery, 2 patients unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, 1 case hysterectomy + bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. "
06/01/2014 - "Among patients with begin struma ovarii, 25 cases underwent cystectomy, 15 cases unilateral, 2 bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, 22 cases hysterectomy + unilateral or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. "
01/01/2012 - "The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salphingo-oophorectomy and histopathology showed papillary thyroid-type carcinoma arising from the left struma ovarii. "
02/01/2014 - "Key Points • Clinical features in struma ovarii are generally non-specific and resemble ovarian malignancy.• Pre-operative radiological diagnosis is important to avoid ovarian cancer type surgery (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, hysterectomy, omentectomy and occasionally appendectomy).• State-of-the-art MR imaging might help to characterise this unusual ovarian mass.• Struma ovarii can occasionally present as a purely cystic lesion.• However, the role of imaging to identify struma ovarii preoperatively remains limited. "
02/01/2014 - "As clinical features in struma ovarii patients in the absence of thyrotoxicosis are generally non-specific and resemble ovarian malignancy, preoperative radiological diagnosis becomes all the more relevant in order to avoid ovarian cancer type surgery (including bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, hysterectomy, omentectomy and occasionally appendectomy) for this usually benign and rare ovarian mass.
