Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the kidney treated with sunitinib.

AbstractBACKGROUND:
Metastatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the kidney is a rare malignant vascular tumor with a wide spectrum of behaviors.
CASE REPORT:
We present the case of a 53-year-old male patient with tumor metastases which developed after radical nephrectomy. We describe the immunohistochemistry profile of the tumor and the successful long-term results of treatment with sunitinib, a multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Also, we discuss the rationale for using this type of medication based on immunohistochemistry results.
CONCLUSION:
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of metastatic renal epithelioid hemangioendothelioma treated successfully with sunitinib.
