Vertical Dimension (Occlusion Vertical Dimension)

The length of the face determined by the distance of separation of jaws. Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD or VDO) or contact vertical dimension is the lower face height with the teeth in centric occlusion. Rest vertical dimension (VDR) is the lower face height measured from a chin point to a point just below the nose, with the mandible in rest position. (From Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p250)

04/01/2002 - "The outcome assessment was based on reduction in pain, improvement in vertical dimension of mouth opening, and mandibular excursions. "
03/01/2015 - "The study group had more loss of vertical dimension than the controls (p=0.011) and restriction of the maximum mouth opening (p=0.024); they had more pain on mandibular movements (p=0.001), limitation of mandibular function (p<0.001), masticatory discomfort (p<0.001) and myofascial pain (p=0.001). "
07/01/2018 - "Relative to "recording CR" (1) it can be determined in patients without pain or derangement of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), (2) but may not be recordable in the presence of dysfunction of the masticatory system, or (3) due to the neuromuscular influence or proprioception from the dentition, (4) is a clinical useful repeatable reference position for mounting casts, or (5) for developing a functional treatment occlusion, (6) at an established vertical dimension, and (7) may vary slightly by recording method. "
03/01/2017 - "Outcome variables assessed at baseline (T0), immediately after (T2) and 48 hours after treatment (T1) were: pain intensity with the aid of a visual analogue scale (VAS); PPT of masticatory and cervical structures; EMG activity during mandibular rest position (MR), maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and habitual chewing (HC). "
01/01/2012 - "This paper presents a treatment with ORPD in a 55-year-old male patient who had severe attrition in the maxillary and mandibular teeth, temporomandibular joint pain and reduced vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). "
