Phosphatidylethanolamines (Cephalins)

Derivatives of phosphatidic acids in which the phosphoric acid is bound in ester linkage to an ethanolamine moiety. Complete hydrolysis yields 1 mole of glycerol, phosphoric acid and ethanolamine and 2 moles of fatty acids.
Also Known As:
Cephalins; Ethanolamineglycerophospholipids; Phosphoglyceride, Ethanolamine; Phosphoglycerides, Ethanolamine; Cephalin; Ethanolamine Phosphoglyceride; Ethanolamine Phosphoglycerides

07/20/1935 - "The addition of an excess of platelets, whether normal, hemophilic, or animal in origin, accelerates thrombin production and makes hemophilic blood clot normally; but cephalin, despite the fact that it accelerates thrombin production in normal plasma, is unexplainedly ineffective when added to hemophilic plasma."

07/03/2017 - "Concurrent experiments showed that eosinophils contributed to intravascular thrombosis by exhibiting a strong endogenous thrombin-generation capacity that relied on the enzymatic generation and active provision of a procoagulant phospholipid surface enriched in 12/15-lipoxygenase-derived hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid-phosphatidylethanolamines. 06/01/2001 - "In an effort to reduce the risks of a possible iatrogenic transmission of bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) through the use of bovine-derived medicinal products, we patented in the USA in 1999 a polysaccharide from brown algae, endowed with interesting pharmacological activities: (a) concentration-dependent inhibition of thromboplastin or cephalin-kaolin-induced thrombin generation from platelets, (b) concentration-dependent inhibition of thrombin-induced platelet aggregation, (c) thrombin has hypotensive effect, which was blunted and zeroed by our fucansulfate in a dose-dependent way, (d) when aortae are stimulated with thrombin, they become stickier for polymorphonucleated leukocytes (PMNs); our fucansulfate decreased concentration-dependently, PMNs sticking to autologous rabbit aortae, (e) dose-dependent inhibition of thrombin-induced thrombosis.
