Abruptio Placentae (Placental Abruption)

Premature separation of the normally implanted PLACENTA from the UTERUS. Signs of varying degree of severity include UTERINE BLEEDING, uterine MUSCLE HYPERTONIA, and FETAL DISTRESS or FETAL DEATH.

5. Magnesium Sulfate (Sulfate, Magnesium)FDA LinkGeneric
08/01/2000 - "Magnesium sulfate exposure was associated with decreased risk (OR 0.13, CI 0.03-0.66) after exclusion of premature rupture of the membranes and abruptio placentae. "
11/01/1998 - "However, the preterm birth group received magnesium sulfate tocolysis more frequently (31% vs 7%) and had a significantly greater rate of peripartum complications, such as rupture of membranes and abruptio placentae, than the group of patients who delivered at term (46.2% vs 12.5%, P <.05). "
03/01/1995 - "During the treatment period for those with a gestational age of less than 34 weeks, there were two patients with abruptio placentae in group I and the treatment periods were noted to be longer in group II than in group I. From the results of monitoring serum magnesium level in group I, when therapeutic level was achieved, magnesium sulfate induced great discomfort which might have led to the deterioration of the patients' condition. "
01/01/1998 - "The association between neonatal mortality and magnesium sulfate was not altered by maternal infection, gender, maternal race or ethnicity, maternal age, level of care, breech presentation, surgical delivery, corticosteroids, abruptio placentae, placenta previa, or bleeding on admission. "
10/01/2006 - "The groups were compared regarding the presence of severe pre-eclampsia, hemolysis elevated liver enzymes low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, eclampsia, placental abruption, hematological complications, renal failure, requirement for antihypertensive or magnesium sulfate treatments, cesarean section for acute fetal distress, birthweight, Apgar scores, perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity including admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, convulsions, intracranial hemorrhage, hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, and jaundice. "

10/01/2008 - "After we controlled for variables that were clinically relevant, logistic regression analysis demonstrated that ultrasound evidence of severe neonatal cerebral lesions was associated independently with antenatal administration of corticosteroids (adjusted odds ratio, 0.3; 95% CI, 0.11-0.88; P = .03) and occurrence of placental abruption (adjusted odds ratio, 5.4; 95% CI, 1.4-20.7; P = .02). "
10/01/2011 - "There were no significant differences in the gender, the percentage of twins, the percentage of the younger one in twins, maternal age, the percentage of using antenatal corticosteroids, the percentage of premature rupture of membranes, the percentage of placental abruption, the delivery mode and the fertilization mode in preterm infants with different severities of RDS. "
05/01/1993 - "Authors report a patient treated with corticosteroids for bronchial asthma who was afflicted by placental abruption at 24 weeks' gestation.
07/01/1999 - "A 36-year-old para 3 with early third-trimester severe preeclampsia, mild placental abruption, and fetal growth restriction, with a reassuring BPP of 8/8, was managed expectantly with intravenous magnesium sulfate, hydralazine, and intramuscular corticosteroids. "
