[Vernon Luck adjustable cup arthroplasty in the treatment of nontraumatic femur head necrosis].

Abstract
We have performed cup arthroplasty on patients with aseptic necrosis of the head of the femur for 25 years, mostly using the cup designed by Vernon Luck. Our patients have been followed up for between 3 and 17 years, and two thirds have good or excellent results. The hips take between six months and one year to achieve their maximum potential. Apart from good surgical technique, the presence of a healthy acetabulum, free of damage to the articular surface, is the principal requirement for success. The degree of necrosis present does not appear to be of significance. We consider that this procedure has a place in the management of young patients who have progressed beyond the stage where they might be suitable for osteotomy, but are though to be too young for replacement arthroplasty. The operation involves minimal loss of bone stock.
