Abstract |
A centre where people can go to inject illegal drugs in Sydney has proved controversial to the public and health professionals. But the centre's nursing staff maintain they are saving lives and helping people into rehabilitation: Clients have personal identity numbers and passwords. They are provided with clean injecting equipment. Clients have to bring their own drugs to the centre. Nurses supervise clients' injections. Resuscitation equipment is on hand in case a client overdoses. Nurses give oxygen and naloxone under standing orders.
