Neurocytoma

A benign brain tumor composed of neural elements which most often arise from the SEPTUM PELLUCIDUM and the walls of the lateral ventricles. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy evaluations may reveal expression of neuron specific enolase and synaptophysin and cells containing microtubuli, neurosecretory granules, and presynaptic vesicles. 03/01/2004 - "In the group of neuronal and mixed glioneuronal neoplasms are lesions with distinctive morphological features that are still not included in a precise classification, including extraventricular neurocytoma, papillary glioneuronal tumor, rosette-forming glioneuronal of the fourth ventricle, glioneuronal with neuropil-like rosette, and DNT-like tumor of the septum pellucidum. "
10/01/2001 - "Tumor cells with immunoreactive bi- or multi-polar processes were mostly encountered in astroglial neoplasms, whereas the small cell component in neurocytomas and DNT was not labeled. "
12/01/2002 - "Because of their histological similarities, it is occasionally difficult to differentiate neurocytoma and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) from oligodendroglial tumors. "
11/01/2008 - "Furthermore, six histological variants of well-known brain tumours have been added, partially because they show different biological behaviour and/or prognosis: pilomyxoid astrocytoma; atypical choroid plexus papilloma; medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity; anaplastic medulloblastoma; extraventricular neurocytoma; non-specific variant of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (DNT). "
01/01/2003 - "PGNT may be regarded as a variant of ganglioglioma or as a complex variant of extraventricular neurocytoma and belongs to a wide group of benign, dysembryoplastic or even hamartomatous neuroepithelial tumors, which may differentiate into both, glial or neuronal direction: pleomorphic astrocytoma may posses neurocytic differentiation, desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma may be regarded as complex superficial dural astrocytoma and DNT may present gliomatous areas (complex DNT).
