Description:
A technique utilizing a laser coupled to a catheter which is used in the dilatation of occluded blood vessels. This includes laser thermal angioplasty where the laser energy heats up a metal tip, and direct laser angioplasty where the laser energy directly ablates the occlusion. One form of the latter approach uses an EXCIMER LASER which creates microscopically precise cuts without thermal injury. When laser angioplasty is performed in combination with balloon angioplasty it is called laser-assisted balloon angioplasty (ANGIOPLASTY, BALLOON, LASER-ASSISTED).

- " The present study was designed to investigate the role of energy profile on the development of arterial spasm during laser angioplasty" 11/01/1989
- " In contrast, spasm was never observed in any of the 16 arteries in which laser angioplasty was performed using a pulsed laser (0.95 to 6.37 joules/cm2, 10 to 50 Hz, 48 to 370 seconds)" 11/01/1989

- " BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although laser angioplasty has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of long, complex coronary arterial atherosclerotic stenoses, there is an associated risk of acute arterial spasm, dissection, and perforation as well as a significant restenosis rate" 12/01/1992
- " Failure of laser angioplasty occurred in five patients of series 1 and 2, and nine patients of series 3. Frequently observed complications included coronary spasm in 18 to 32%, dissections in 16% to 33%, and vessel closure in 18 to 27%"

- " There were no significant differences between the laser angioplasty group and the balloon angioplasty group in the incidence of myocardial infarctions (1 patient vs 3, respectively, p = 0.36), coronary bypass surgery (4 patients vs 2, respectively, p = 0.34), repeat angioplasty (10 patients vs 8, respectively, p = 0.46) or primary clinical end point (15 patients vs 12, respectively, p = 0.34)" 01/13/1996
- " Myocardial infarction, coronary bypass surgery, and repeat angioplasty occurred in 4.6%, 10.6%, and 21.2%, respectively, of the patients in the laser angioplasty group compared with 5.7%, 10.8%, and 18.5% of the balloon angioplasty group" 01/01/1993

- " There were three acute occlusions during laser angioplasty but no myocardial infarctions, emergency bypass surgeries, or deaths"
