Osteoarthritis

A progressive, degenerative joint disease, the most common form of arthritis, especially in older persons. The disease is thought to result not from the aging process but from biochemical changes and biomechanical stresses affecting articular cartilage. In the foreign literature it is often called osteoarthrosis deformans.
Also Known As:
Arthroses; Arthrosis; Arthritides, Degenerative; Degenerative Arthritides; Degenerative Arthritis; Osteoarthritides; Osteoarthroses; Arthritis, Degenerative; Osteoarthrosis; Osteoarthrosis Deformans

Drugs and Biologics

Drugs and Important Biological Agents (IBA) related to Osteoarthritis:
1. Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan)IBA
04/03/2009 - "The results of these studies demonstrate that enhanced chondrocyte survival and improved mitochondrial function under conditions of oxidative injury are probably important therapeutic mechanisms for the actions of hyaluronic acid in osteoarthritis."
12/01/2008 - "Clinically affected dogs had significantly greater degrees of pathologic findings, compared with dogs with surgically induced osteoarthritis (ie, those with CrCLt, GR, and MR stifle joints), and with respect to lameness scores, radiographic signs of osteoarthritis, pathologic findings on arthroscopy, and synovial fluid hyaluronan concentration. "
08/20/2018 - "CONCLUSIONS The findings of this clinical and CBCT imaging study showed that sodium hyaluronate injection into the superior and inferior TMJ space in patients with osteoarthritis improved clinical symptoms, but did not control the progression of osteoarthritic joint destruction."
01/01/2018 - "The current study explored whether intra-articular (IA) injection of autologous adipose mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) achieved better therapeutic efficacy than autologous stromal vascular fraction (SVF) combined with HA to prevent osteoarthritis (OA) progression and determined how long autologous ASCs combined with HA must remain in the joint to observe efficacy. "
03/01/2012 - "However, evidence of efficacy of hyaluronic acid in ankle osteoarthritis is still lacking: several studies have been performed without a control group, or have shown similar results to those obtained with different therapeutic procedures. "
