Description: A silver metallic element that exists as a liquid at room temperature. It has the atomic symbol Hg (from hydrargyrum, liquid silver), atomic number 80, and atomic weight 200.59. Mercury is used in many industrial applications and its salts have been employed therapeutically as purgatives, antisyphilitics, disinfectants, and astringents. It can be absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes which leads to MERCURY POISONING. Because of its toxicity, the clinical use of mercury and mercurials is diminishing.

06/01/2009 - "Use of the American tables identified very high proportions of hypertensive subjects if compared with the distribution curves from our own study (p less than 0.00001), albeit that our findings correlated well with previous Italian charts as reference (no statistical significance). In short, notwithstanding a little difference in millimetres of mercury about the same percentiles, the tables prepared in the United States of America overestimate the prevalence of hypertension, specific Italian material being more suitable for our needs. "
06/01/2009 - "An ESH protocol validated wrist device was compared with the upper arm mercury sphygmomanometry in a study population (33 patients, 99 measurements) including a relevant number of subjects with pulse pressure >50 mm Hg (84.8%) and isolated systolic hypertension (27.3%). "
05/26/2007 - "CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests an association between long-term exposure to inorganic mercury in workers of mercury mines and an increased risk of circulatory mortality, especially mortality due to hypertension and cerebrovascular diseases."
12/01/2006 - "Participants in a hypertension treatment trial before initiation of therapy were included in post-hoc analyses to investigate the alerting response separately for trained nurse blood pressure measurements with mercury sphygmomanometer and measurements taken by an Omron 705 CP automated device. "
02/01/2001 - "We obtained blood pressure (BP) records by taking the mean of the second and third BP measurement, using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer, and assessed risk factors for hypertension in the study subjects. "
