Endomyocardial Fibrosis

A condition characterized by the thickening of the ventricular ENDOCARDIUM and subendocardium (MYOCARDIUM), seen mostly in children and young adults in the TROPICAL CLIMATE. The fibrous tissue extends from the apex toward and often involves the HEART VALVES causing restrictive blood flow into the respective ventricles (CARDIOMYOPATHY, RESTRICTIVE).
Also Known As:
Endomyocardial Fibroses; Fibroses, Endomyocardial; Fibrosis, Endomyocardial

05/15/1989 - "Effectiveness of operative and nonoperative therapy in endomyocardial fibrosis."
05/01/1983 - "However, at present, operation seems to be the treatment of choice for this condition because (1) endomyocardial fibrosis is characterized by a grave prognosis and medical therapy is ineffective; (2) endomyocardial fibrosis is a disease in which only the heart is affected, lesions in other organs being the result of passive congestion; (3) systolic performance of the heart is usually only slightly depressed; and (4) the surgical procedure is easily performed, so that the mortality is acceptable."
08/01/2011 - "Malaria is among the factors thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF), a restrictive cardiomyopathy of unclear etiology, with no specific therapy, which affects predominantly children and adolescents. "
05/01/2013 - "This review discusses several forms of heart failure that are common in sub-Saharan Africa (e.g., rheumatic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, pericardial disease, various dilated cardiomyopathies, HIV cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, endomyocardial fibrosis, ischemic heart disease, cor pulmonale) and presents each form with regard to epidemiology, natural history, clinical characteristics, diagnostic considerations and therapies.
