Dementia (Dementias)

An acquired organic mental disorder with loss of intellectual abilities of sufficient severity to interfere with social or occupational functioning. The dysfunction is multifaceted and involves memory, behavior, personality, judgment, attention, spatial relations, language, abstract thought, and other executive functions. The intellectual decline is usually progressive, and initially spares the level of consciousness.

01/01/2019 - "We found delayed clearance of CSF tracer from CSF nearby ERC, the ERC itself, and the white matter adjacent to ERC, which was most evident after 24 hr. The observations were interpreted as indicative of impaired glymphatic circulation and further suggested this being a possible mechanism behind accumulation of amyloid-β and tau in ERC and instrumental for dementia in iNPH. "
02/01/2020 - "I speculate that the same mechanism is responsible for the variability of normal brain ageing: the oldest old with well-preserved cognitive function are people genetically programmed for extreme ageing who have benefited from better cell selection during prenatal and neonatal life and therefore have fewer surviving neurones vulnerable to amyloid-promoted degeneration, whereas the process of early life cell selection was less successful in the oldest old who develop dementia."
01/01/2019 - "Among older persons without baseline dementia followed for a median of 4.8 years, a prediction model that included amyloid PET, tau PET, and MRI cortical thickness resulted in a small but statistically significant improvement in predicting memory decline over a model with more readily available clinical and genetic variables. "
04/01/2015 - "Novel diagnostic methods, such as cerebrospinal fluid-based neurochemical dementia diagnostics (CSF-NDD) and [18F] amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) are meanwhile recommended for specific indications by international guidelines for the improved early and differential diagnostics of multigenic (sporadic) Alzheimer's dementia (AD). "
01/01/2023 - "Low clearance of amyloid-β and elevated brain amyloid positivity may link impaired kidney function with elevated risk of dementia. "
