Cryptorchidism (Undescended Testes)

A developmental defect in which a TESTIS or both TESTES failed to descend from high in the ABDOMEN to the bottom of the SCROTUM. Testicular descent is essential to normal SPERMATOGENESIS which requires temperature lower than the BODY TEMPERATURE. Cryptorchidism can be subclassified by the location of the maldescended testis.
Also Known As:
Undescended Testes; Abdominal Cryptorchidism; Bilateral Cryptorchidism; Cryptorchism; Inguinal Cryptorchidism; Testes, Undescended; Unilateral Cryptorchidism; Cryptorchidism, Abdominal; Cryptorchidism, Bilateral; Cryptorchidism, Inguinal; Cryptorchidism, Unilateral; Undescended Testis; Testis, Undescended

Therapies and Procedures

1. Orchiopexy
02/01/2004 - "However, efficient revascularization stemming from the superficial epigastric artery of the fasciovascular flap was found in group 5. The testicular biopsy scores of groups 2 and 5 were significantly greater than those of groups 3 and 4. The results of the present study demonstrate that the fasciovascular flap as a vascular carrier revascularizes the testis through spermatic vessels after delayed division and provides an adjuvant treatment modality or first-stage procedure in a salvage operation for high-undescended testis during staged orchiopexy."
05/24/1997 - "Risk was significantly raised in testes that had had biopsy samples removed during orchidopexy (relative risk = 66.7 (23.9 to 143.3) compared with a testis in a man in the general population) and was significantly greater in these testes than in undescended testes that had not had biopsy samples taken at orchidopexy (6.7 (2.7 to 13.5)). "
01/01/1987 - "Surgical orchiopexy after surgically induce mechanical cryptorchidism resulted in improved fertility (30% vs. 0%); however, the improvement was still significantly less than the control rate. "
10/01/2007 - "CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study have shown that scrotal orchiopexy is simple, safe, and effective in selected cases compared with the standard two-incision approach in the treatment of the palpable undescended testis."
01/01/2009 - "Low transscrotal orchidopexy is a safe and effective approach for undescended testes distal to the external inguinal ring."

5. Drug Therapy (Chemotherapy)
03/01/2001 - "Aiming to study the effectiveness of medical therapy in cryptorchidism, a computerised Medline research from 1985 to 1999 on the thesaurus word "cryptorchidism" with the filter "drug therapy" was conducted. "
02/01/1990 - "Histological study of testicular biopsies from infertile men showing Sertoli-cell-only tubules due to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, cryptorchidism, oestrogen treatment, chemotherapy or Del Castillo's syndrome, revealed four types of Sertoli cells: (1) normal adult mature cells showing an indented nucleus, grossly triangular in shape with a prominent tripartite nucleolus; (2) immature cells with round regularly outlined nuclei and immature cytoplasm; (3) dysgenetic cells showing immature nuclei and a nearly mature cytoplasm with less developed cytoplasmic organelles; and (4) involuting cells with very irregularly outlined nuclei and a mature cytoplasm containing abundant lipid droplets and residual bodies and atypical inter-Sertoli junctional specializations. "
04/01/1998 - "Maturation arrest, Sertoli cell-only, cryptorchidism, chemotherapy and mumps do not appear to have a major impact on the pregnancy rate. "
11/01/1997 - "These findings were the same for all types of testicular failure whether Sertoli cell only, maturation arrest, cryptorchidism, or post-chemotherapy azoospermia. "
01/01/1989 - "Patients with a previous history of cryptorchidism or varicocele, and those who had received combined chemotherapy, were excluded. "
