Chronic Disease (Chronic Diseases)

Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed). For epidemiological studies chronic disease often includes HEART DISEASES; STROKE; CANCER; and diabetes (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 2).

11/01/2007 - "Similarly, many studies have demonstrated a significant protection against chronic diseases from a global healthy lifestyle (HL) pattern which includes not only dietary habits but also physical activity and abstinence from smoking, whereas few data regarding the influence of a HL pattern on circulating biomarkers are available. "
07/01/2018 - "Eleven studies showed mHealth interventions to be effective in improving self-management behaviors, biomarkers, or patient-reported outcome measures associated with chronic diseases. "
08/26/2020 - "The data demonstrate that changes in a novel risk calculator score coincide with changes in sensitive biomarkers for chronic disease. When the risks of an individual are reduced, the biomarkers reflect that change with self-reported wellbeing also improved. "
06/01/2011 - "  and  Discussion The issues addressed include: (1) development of collaborative care in the context of oncology (e.g., timing of the intervention, tailoring of the intervention, ethical issues regarding randomization of patients, and changes in medical treatment over the course of the study); (2) use of a website by chronically ill populations (e.g., design and access to the website, development of the website and intervention, ethical issues associated with website development, website usage, and unanticipated costs associated with website development); (3) evaluation of the efficacy of intervention (e.g., patient preferences, proxy raters, changes in medical treatment, and inclusion of biomarkers as endpoints); and (4) analyses and interpretation of the intervention (e.g., confounding factors, dose and active ingredients, and risks and benefits of collaborative care interventions in chronically ill patients). "

Therapies and Procedures

1. Therapeutics
10/01/2014 - "This review is not a result of a search, but rather a conceptual unification of (a) the increasing restrictions in guideline-writing favoring more RCTs, and rejecting observational studies when chronic diseases with a long incubation period may sometimes be best probed by the latter; (b) the possibility RCTs may be inconclusive, nonapplicable, or result in 'negative' results which may misdirect future therapy by physicians and undermine adherence by patients; (c) the potential improvement in patient care from having all available information evaluated (especially epidemiological studies of chronic diseases) and synthesized in guidelines. "
09/01/2008 - "Studies that address the cost of therapies (especially for chronic diseases) will be necessary in the future and will create the required transparency to guarantee reasonable medical care that takes the cost-benefit ratio and the best outcome for the patient's quality of life into account."
01/01/2020 - "The introduction of antiretroviral therapy in 1996 has dramatically changed the global landscape of HIV care, resulting in significantly improved survival and changing HIV to a chronic disease. "
04/15/2015 - "There is little evidence for the efficacy of psychological therapies that include parents on most outcome domains of functioning, for a large number of common chronic illnesses in children. "
11/01/2010 - "The challenge is then how best to utilize therapies that have evidently superior efficacy in a chronic disease of young adults, to obtain the best benefit-risk ratio, and how to monitor and prevent emergent safety concerns."
