medullary Thyroid cancer

A neuroendocrine carcinoma that originates in the C-cells of the THYROID GLAND; about 10-20% of cases are familial. It occurs sporadically or is associated with MULTIPLE ENDOCRINE NEOPLASIA SYNDROMES. Germline and somatic mutations in RET and NTRK1 genes have been identified. OMIM: 155240
