protein that provides the signal for bacteria to enter starvation mode and limit reproduction; a potential target for antibiotics; an exopolyphosphatase that degrades long-chain polyphosphates in a highly processive reaction and also hydrolyzes the terminal 5' phosphate of the modified nucleotide guanosine 5' triphoshpate 3' diphosphate (pppGpp);
